Joyce Beatty, a Democratic lawmaker from Ohio, is seeking a federal judge's intervention to reverse the recent decision to attach President Donald Trump's name to the Kennedy Center, a historic performing arts venue in Washington, DC In a motion submitted on Wednesday, Beatty contends that Congress intended for the Kennedy Center to honor only the late President John F. Kennedy, and no other figure should be included in its designation.
Beatty's motion asserts that renaming the venue without congressional authorization undermines its purpose as the sole memorial to President Kennedy in the capital. "Renaming the Kennedy Center for President Trump - without any authorization from Congress - undermines the Center's raison d'être, and frustrates its purpose," she stated in the motion.
The controversy began when Trump's appointed board of directors voted in December to rename the institution as the Trump-Kennedy Center, claiming that the current president warranted recognition for his efforts to renovate the center. This decision sparked immediate backlash from Democrats and members of the Kennedy family, along with inquiries from historians regarding the legality of the name change.
Beatty argues that lawmakers have consistently emphasized the importance of preserving the Kennedy Center's original name throughout its history. According to her motion, Congress has been particularly careful that no other names appear on the building's exterior walls, apart from those designating it as a memorial to President Kennedy.
Following the board's decision, Trump's name was added to the Kennedy Center's facade, which is a prominent part of Washington's landscape along the Potomac River. The name change has also been reflected on the center's official website and social media platforms.
The Kennedy Center has been a significant part of the capital's arts scene since its inauguration in 1971. Notably, Trump has announced plans to close the center this summer for renovations expected to last around two years. This closure is also contested by a coalition of eight cultural and historic preservation groups that have initiated a separate legal action to block further physical changes to the venue.
As an ex officio member of the Kennedy Center's board, Beatty was recently allowed by a federal judge to participate in board meetings, although the judge did not compel the board to allow her to vote on the closure of the center.
The legal battle surrounding the Kennedy Center's name and its future renovations underscores the contentious intersection of politics and culture in the US, particularly as it pertains to the legacy of prominent historical figures like John F. Kennedy and Donald Trump. The outcome of Beatty's motion may set a precedent for how memorials and public institutions are named and recognized in the future.
