Meta has made a groundbreaking announcement regarding its commitment to nuclear energy, aiming to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. The tech giant has entered into agreements with several companies to enhance energy production at existing nuclear plants and develop new nuclear technologies, which are essential for powering its data centers and AI operations.
The agreements, which follow a rigorous request for proposals (RFP) process, involve partnerships with Oklo, TerraPower, and Vistra. These collaborations are expected to add up to 6.6 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy to the grid by 2035, significantly contributing to the energy needs of Meta's operations while also creating thousands of construction and long-term jobs in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Investment in Advanced Nuclear Technology

Meta's Chief Global Affairs Officer, Joel Kaplan, emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, "It's about investing in the future of American energy, creating jobs, strengthening local communities, and beating China in the AI race." The projects are designed to provide clean, reliable electricity, which is crucial for the growing demands of AI technology.
The partnership with TerraPower will support the development of two new Natrium® units, capable of generating up to 690 MW of firm power, with delivery expected as early as 2032. Additionally, Meta has rights for energy from up to six other Natrium units, targeting a total capacity of 2.8 GW by 2035.
Oklo's collaboration focuses on developing new nuclear energy in Pike County, Ohio, with plans to construct multiple Aurora Powerhouse reactors. This initiative is projected to generate up to 1.2 GW of clean baseload power, further supporting Meta's operations in the region.

Supporting Existing Nuclear Infrastructure

In addition to new developments, Meta's agreements with Vistra will extend the operational lifespan of three existing nuclear power plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania. These plants, including the Perry and Davis-Besse facilities, will see increased energy production through significant upgrades, which are expected to add 433 MW of capacity to the grid.
Vistra's President and CEO, Jim Burke, highlighted the collaboration's benefits, stating, "This is a unique and exciting collaboration, and Vistra is proud to partner with Meta on these long-term power purchase agreements." The agreements not only ensure the continued safe operation of these plants but also contribute to local economic development and job creation.
