Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) has announced a significant collaboration with Google Public Sector to incorporate Google Cloud's artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing into its research and educational framework. This partnership aims to enhance research capabilities, expand computing capacity, and empower faculty and students with advanced AI tools to streamline their work processes, particularly in grant management.
The collaboration is expected to provide Oregon Tech researchers with access to powerful computing infrastructure, including graphics processing units (GPUs), tensor processing units (TPUs), and specialized datasets. These resources will support research efforts in critical fields such as life sciences, climate research, robotics, and chip design.
Dr Nagi Naganathan, the President of Oregon Tech, emphasized that this partnership builds upon the institution's innovation ethos. He noted that while faculty and students engage in numerous applied research projects, the existing infrastructure often limits their ability to identify and seize new opportunities. "This collaborative effort will help connect our exceptional researchers with additional opportunities and accelerate our ability to drive innovation that leads to real-world solutions," he stated.

The implementation of AI tools is expected to simplify the review of lengthy requests for proposals, allowing team members to focus on key aspects of their projects. Dr Abdy Afjeh, Senior Vice Provost for Research at Oregon Tech, remarked, "By automating repetitive and time-consuming tasks, our relatively small team can focus on supporting faculty and students as they develop proposals, build collaborations, and conduct impactful research.".
The collaboration is also seen as a vital step in positioning Oregon Tech as a leader in applied research and innovation. The university aims to serve as a "surrogate lab for industry," as Dr Naganathan described it, by connecting with industries seeking practical solutions to real-world problems. "When companies are looking for help solving practical problems, I want Oregon Tech to be the first place they think of," he said.
