In an exciting revelation during its recent State of Play broadcast, PlayStation has announced the surprise release of a new 2D side-scrolling game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, while also confirming the development of a remake for the original God of War trilogy.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is now available for purchase on the PlayStation Store, priced at $29.99 for the standard edition and $39.99 for a digital deluxe version that includes extra items such as weapons and avatars. The game is a collaboration between Santa Monica Studio and indie developer Mega Cat Studios, featuring a narrative set in Kratos' youth as he trains alongside his brother Deimos.
The spin-off is described as a 2D action platformer that showcases a canon story written by the team behind God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, with the character of Kratos narrated by TC Carson, who reprises his role for the first time in over a decade. Players will engage in combat using a spear and shield, as well as harness divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus to defeat various foes.
The visual style of Sons of Sparta employs stunning hand-drawn pixel animation, bringing to life new creatures inspired by Greek mythology while also revisiting classic elements from the franchise. Santa Monica Studio expressed its enthusiasm for this new direction, stating, "We've taken some big swings over the years in an effort to keep God of War exciting, surprising, and satisfying for players to enjoy.".
In addition to the spin-off, the remake of the original God of War trilogy was confirmed, although details remain sparse. The project is reportedly in the early stages of development, with only a logo shown during the announcement. This trilogy includes the iconic titles that began with God of War in 2005, followed by God of War II in 2007 and God of War III in 2010. The remake has been a frequent request from fans, as the franchise celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
Santa Monica Studio emphasized the importance of this project to its community, stating, "The genuine, passionate interest from fans to see the original games return is something we're very thankful for." They also requested patience from the audience, assuring that further updates will be shared in the future.
With the release of Sons of Sparta and the confirmation of the trilogy remake, PlayStation continues to expand the God of War universe, which has long been recognized as one of the most successful action-adventure franchises in gaming history. The original trilogy has garnered numerous accolades and remains a beloved part of gaming culture, making these announcements particularly significant for fans.
As players dive into the new spin-off and await the remake, the legacy of Kratos and his epic journey through ancient mythologies remains a focal point of interest in the gaming community. This dual announcement marks a new chapter for the franchise, inviting both new players and longtime fans to engage with the storied past of one of PlayStation's most iconic characters.
With God of War: Sons of Sparta now available and the trilogy remake on the horizon, the excitement surrounding the franchise is palpable, promising fresh experiences while honoring its storied origins.
